POSTED: 6:48 pm CDT April 6, 2008

The first-ever "Station of the Year" award went to WISN-TV (Channel 12) Saturday evening at the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) awards ceremony in Madison. The station took home a total of 10 first place awards and was named "Best News Operation," all in a major market.

The first place WBA awards included:
  • Station of the Year
  • Best News Operation
  • Best Evening Newscast, WISN “12 News at 10:00, Nov. 6, 2007
  • Best New Series or Documentary, Border Patrol
  • Best Feature, 5-Year-Old Guitar Phenom”
  • Best News Video, Cancer Runner
  • Best Sports Reporting, Extreme Packer Fan
  • Best Sports Video, Indy Race Driver Trains MPD
  • Best Weathercast, Weather Watch 12

In addition, WISN’s "12’s Season To Celebrate" holiday extravaganza won first place in the Special Interest category.

The station has won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in the category of "Best Local Newscast." The Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) gives the award to recognize outstanding achievement in electronic journalism.

WISN "12 News at 10" is honored as the best, large-market, local newscast in a four-state region, which includes highly competitive television markets such as Minneapolis. Award recipients are singled out for "demonstrating the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the electronic news profession."

This is the third year in a row WISN 12 News has received a regional Edward R. Murrow award. In 2006, WISN was also honored for Best Newscast. In 2007, WISN 12 News earned a Murrow award for Best Spot News. The regional win automatically enters WISN-TV in the national Edward R. Murrow competition. Winners of the national competition will be announced in June.

WISN-TV, the ABC station in Milwaukee, is owned by Hearst-Argyle Television. Hearst-Argyle owns 26 television stations, and manages an additional three television and two radio stations, in geographically diverse U.S. markets.
