CPSC Recalls Counterfeit Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers designed to protect you and your home may be counterfeit, the federal government said on Tuesday.The concern is the knock-off circuit breakers could pose a serious fire hazard.The Consumer Product Safety Commission told 12 News there is "a rash of the bogus breakers flooding the market."
The CPSC recalled nearly 400,000 of the counterfeit breakers that the government said are coming into the United States from China.The knock-offs are all using the name Square D, which is one of the most popular names in electrical supplies.The counterfeit circuit breakers are black and are labeled as Square D QO-series models 115, 120, 130, 215, 220, 230, 240, 250, 260 and 2020 and Square D QOB-series models 115, 120, 130, 220, 230, 250, 260 and 1515.They were distributed by a Florida company, Specialty Lamp International, and the counterfeits were sold nationwide between May 2005 and June 2006.For more information, the company has set up consumer hot line at 866-650-3076 or visit its Web site at www.ebulb.netThe CPSC Web site shows the difference between a genuine Square D breaker and the counterfeits.This is fourth recall since last fall -- from a variety of distributors -- all involving bogus circuit breakers.The CPSC told 12 News that it is on the lookout for more. It has tracked most of them to China, but not to whoever is manufacturing them.
