One local allergist said we are going through one of the worst allergy seasons she has seen.

Local Allergist: Worst Season For Allergies In Some Time

“It's been really bad; I've been to the allergist three times this week,” said Kerry Krivello, whose children are having a tough time right now.

Dr. Kristen Volkman of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare said the late summer into fall allergy season is the worst she has seen in a long time.

“I definitely see a lot more patients coming in and having problems,” Volkman said.

Volkman said a dry summer and strong winds have been kicking up more pollen, and ragweed seems to be the biggest problem.

“It's definitely out in moderate to high levels,” Volkman said.

Volkman said there are many over-the-counter medications that really do work, including Zertek and Claritin.

“Each year the drug companies get better at designing meds -- antihistamine with less sedation, fewer dosing intervals so you don't have to take them as frequently,” Volkman said.

She also added that if you are not finding relief from symptoms after a few days of taking the drugstore medication, it is worthwhile to talk to a doctor.

As for Krivello, she said she is doing all she can to protect her children.

“Just the factor of not having dust, keeping windows shut and using the A/C more,” Krivello said.

The following are a few other tips to reduce seasonal allergies:

- Minimize your time outside

- After going outside, take a shower and change clothes

- Keep windows closed in your car and home

- Don’t dry clothes on a clothes line
