MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Common Council President Willie Hines announced Thursday that the council is launching its own investigation -- aside from state and federal investigations -- into licensing and city business operated through the office of Alderman Michael McGee Jr.In an afternoon press conference, Hines said constituents in McGee's district need "much reassurance as it relates to the delivery of the city of Milwaukee services."Hines said the investigation would include taking a closer look at licensing, zoning requests, land sales and other business that passed through McGee's office.
"I want to make it clear that we are not making any accusations against the alderman. However, I do believe I owe the residents of the 6th district, as well as the citizens of the city of Milwaukee, as much peace as possible," Hines said.Hines said he has already enlisted the help of every city department in the internal review.McGee remains an alderman until he either resigns or is sentenced for a felony. There is a seldom-used state law that would allow the Common Council to vote McGee out of office, however it's unlikely the governing body would take that step, WISN 12 News' Brendan Conway reported.
