MILWAUKEE -- Four days after being arrested at his home, Alderman Mike McGee Jr. claimed he was set up and made a direct appeal to his supporters.During a jailhouse phone call to his father's radio show -- a show he took over in recent weeks after his father's suspension from the airwaves -- McGee asked his supporters for bail money.Audio: McGee Phone Call To WNOV-AM Radio Show
"I just want people to know I'm in good spirits and I got the Holy Spirit with me," McGee said during the three-minute call to the WNOV-AM radio program. "I just appreciate everybody's prayers."McGee said the federal charges accusing him of "shaking down" business owners for money were entrapment and that the state charges, that he plotted to have a man named Pierre beat up, are wrong."People just have to understand this is a family situation and the young guy, Pierre, is family. We would never talk about hurting him or killing him," McGee said.McGee said the government is trying to use "our language against us" and that they "don't even know what we are talking about."The alderman made a direct appeal to his supporters, saying that if each person donated $100 he would be able to post his bail. Before saying good-bye, McGee sang the civil rights song "We Are Soldiers In The Army." Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Thursday that he didn't hear McGee's comments, but said the allegations against the alderman go against everything he's been trying to accomplish since he was elected as mayor."I think the state charges were, frankly, more shocking than the federal charges even were. To have allegations of a threat of force just flies in the face of everything we're trying to do in this community. I'm trying to do everything I can to have less violence in the city. If those allegations are true, he should be out of office right now. I mean, there's just no question about it. You don't have people who are in positions of authority, who are taking steps that he allegedly took, and again, I understand that they're just allegations at this time, but if they are true, he should be out of office," Barrett said.
