MILWAUKEE -- A $50,000 bail was posted Thursday for Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee, but he remains in the Milwaukee County jail on pending federal charges, officials said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Brooks said the bail was posted at 1:55 p.m.

A cashier's check for $50,000 from Mid-America Bank signed by the Rev. George King was used, she said.

Earlier Thursday afternoon, Milwaukee's Common Council President, Willie Hines, sent a letter to attorney Paul Bucher stating that the City of Milwaukee is postponing any potential impeachment proceedings involving McGee.

Bucher represents Vi Anna Jordan, the woman who launched a recall election against McGee.

The letter goes on to say "both the Milwaukee County District Attorney and the U.S. Department of Justice are adamant that the city of Milwaukee not interrupt the charges that Alderman Michael McGee Jr., currently faces. They have conveyed to me their strong objections to any impeachment proceedings, saying that such action would necessarily interrupt that criminal trial."

Hines said he will consult with the city attorney again when the criminal case involving McGee concludes.

McGee was arrested on May 28.

He faces several federal and state charges including, bribery, solicitation to commit a felony and substantial battery, filing false campaign reports, misusing campaign money, making a false statement to election officials, contempt of court, and election bribery charges.
