Michael McGee Jr.

Former Alderman: 'There Will Be A McGee In The 6th District'

UPDATED: 2:32 pm CDT July 2, 2007

Former Alderman Michael McGee Sr. said Monday that the jailing of his son, the current alderman of Milwaukee's 6th District, is unfair and vowed to succeed him if the office is "stolen."

"During the course, I've decided to keep quiet and let justice take its own way," McGee said. "As usual, the road that justice decide to take with black people in particular, and McGee's in general, is the 'L' road. The 'L' road, which is the lynch road. The road you always take. You took the same road with my son."

Supporters called McGee Jr. a "political prisoner," and his father said his son is not receiving the due process to which Americans are entitled. McGee said the bail of $50,000 that was set for his son was too high for the crimes alleged.

"Paris Hilton know what 'bailed-out' means. But Mike McGee don't get to know what 'bailed-out' means," McGee said.

McGee vowed to return to the political arena if his son is sentenced.

"I want them to know, and Milwaukee to know, that there will be a McGee in the 6th District," McGee said. "Once Junior has his office stolen, I will come out of retirement and run for alderman. That's all I got to say."

The comments were met with applause from supporters.

McGee claimed the charges against the current alderman were baseless.

"Those charges is nothing but gossip. They only become real when they get into the court system and the judge approves them as evidence," McGee said. "Right now, it's just a bunch of gossip and hearsay."

McGee made the comments on the front steps of the Federal Courthouse at 517 E. Wisconsin Ave. It was the first time McGee has spoken publicly since his son was arrested May 28 on federal charges of bribery and extortion. The current alderman is also accused of shaking down local business owners in exchange for preferential treatment.

McGee Sr. made headlines in May after making disparaging remarks on the radio about the death of a rival host's mother.
