McGee Fighting For Bail

UPDATED: 9:23 am CDT July 10, 2007

A Milwaukee alderman remains behind bars even after a federal judge granted him bail.

Monday, Alderman Michael McGee was granted $10,000 bail and ordered to stay in his home unless reporting to city hall for council votes.

A few hours later, another federal judge stepped in and ruled McGee could not be released until another hearing was held.

That hearing could be held as early as Tuesday.

Federal prosecutors want McGee to stay behind bars until his federal trial on charges of extortion and bribery. They say McGee was trying to intimidate witnesses from jail.

Alderman Michael McGee Jr. has been in jail since he was arrested on Memorial Day. He's accused of shaking down businesses in his district and demanding money in exchange for favorable treatment.

He posted $50,000 bail last month on state charges that included election fraud. That's when federal authorities took him into custody.
