Jury Selection Under Way In McGee Trial

Former Alderman Could Face 30 Years In Prison

UPDATED: 5:59 pm CDT May 19, 2008

Jury selection began Monday in the case of a jailed former Milwaukee alderman.

Michael McGee Jr. is facing numerous charges, including election fraud, theft and solicitation to commit substantial battery.

The charges are separate from McGee's federal bribery charges, which he is scheduled to go on trial for next month.

The former alderman was arrested almost a year ago after, investigators said, McGee and two other men were overheard threatening to hurt another man suspected of burglary.

Authorities had wiretapped McGee's phone as part of a federal bribery investigation.

Other state charges include election fraud connected to last year's recall election that McGee won from jail.

McGee is accused of buying votes.

If convicted of all state charges, McGee could be sentenced to 30 in prison.

Jury selection will contine at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
