MILWAUKEE -- The state trial for former Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee Jr. is being delayed until July. The defense has requested, and the judge agreed, that it wants wire recordings translated and transcribed into English.McGee is accused of conspiracy to have a man beaten and election fraud.
A federal informant, whose information is what started much of the investigation against McGee, is Arab. On several occasions when he wore a wire, parts of the conversations were held in Arabic, including a conversation with an undercover agent. The defense said it has no way of knowing what was being said in some of those conversations, and it could have been entrapment. The judge adjourned the case and gave the translator until the end of June to finish transcribing.Motions could be heard on July 3, 12 News reporter Nick Bohr said.McGee remains in jail on federal charges. That trial will begin next month. The former alderman was voted out of his 6th District seat last month.
