MILWAUKEE -- A proposal to put a new UW-Milwaukee dormitory on the east side of the city brought out a lot of opposition Tuesday night. The university is looking at three different sites. One is the Prospect Mall parking lot on Prospect Avenue between East Ivanhoe Place and East Kenilworth Place.Outraged neighbors said they already agreed to one dormitory for graduate students nearby, and they were assured no housing for freshman or sophomores would go in.
Students said it actually keeps them directly out of the residential area."This is good for the community. It's going to keep people out of the houses around there. I think it's going to move a little more to the dorms," UW-Milwaukee Student Body President Tyler Draheim said.'We don't want more litter. We don't want rowdy behavior. We don't want to be awakened by some kids experiencing their first drunkenness," east side resident Paul Hinkfuss said.A similar meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss the second location -- North Avenue along the Milwaukee River. The meeting will be at the Urban Ecology Center. The third site being considered is at Farwell Avenue and East Royal Place. A meeting about that location will be Thursday at Holy Rosary Hall.
