MILWAUKEE -- A student supervisor at St. Charles Youth and Family Services, a school for troubled children, is accused of being involved in alleged sexual activity.

Counselor Charged With Sexual Assault

Twenty-two-year-old Kalen Ellis is charged with sexual assault of a child. Ellis is in the Milwaukee County Jail facing felony charges.

Prosecutors said a student who lived at the St. Charles Group home who reported the sexual activity involving the boy's group supervisor.

After his arrest, police said Ellis explained that he'd walked in on a couple of the teen boys he supervises engaged in a sex act. Rather than stop them, he participated and engaged in a second sex act with a 17-year-old student the following day.

Administrators at St. Charles declined comment Friday. So did Ellis' wife.

Ellis has no prior criminal record, and Milwaukee County recognized his good work earlier this year.

According to the criminal complaint, Ellis told police that "he just got caught up" and he knows that it was a mistake and that he wants to apologize to St. Charles Group and the boys that he "let down."

Having sex with a 17-year-old is usually a misdemeanor, but when that 17-year-old is a resident in a group home, it is a 40-year felony.

The court set Ellis’ bail at $1,500 Friday afternoon. Ellis is due back in court in two weeks.
