Father Accused Of Killing Son Dies From Self-Inflicted Wounds

Father Remains Hospitalized

UPDATED: 8:35 pm CST November 19, 2008

A 12-year-old Middleton boy died on Tuesday after apparently being shot by his father near a Madison park. The father then apparently shot himself and died Wednesday afternoon.

Dane County Coroner John Stanley identified the boy as Kyle Dutter on Tuesday night. He said that the boy died from a gunshot wound.

Dutter, who had developmental disabilities, and his father, Ryan Dutter, 36, were found Tuesday morning in a black, 2006 Jeep near Haen Family Park and the Greenbriar Apartment Complex at High Point Road and Tree Lane on the city's West side.

Both were found in the parked vehicle and rushed to the hospital.

"We found a young man who was seriously injured from a gunshot wound or wound, and his father was also wounded from what we believe was a self-inflicted wound," Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department spokesman said earlier in the day.

DeSpain said that police don't believe there's a risk to the neighborhood. Police said the father and son didn't live in the neighborhood where the Jeep was found.

Authorities responded to the scene just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday after an anonymous caller asked that they check on the welfare of a person in the vehicle.

Investigators aren't saying if they found a gun in the Jeep, but they said there is no risk to the public. Investigators are also not saying anything about a possible motive.

"We have a lot of information on this case that we're not at liberty to share yet," DeSpain said. "This is the very early stages of this investigation. The detectives will be talking to family. They'll be putting together this puzzle."

Kyle Dutter's grandfather, Kenneth Bach, of Beloit, said that his grandson was an inquisitive boy who always had a big grin on his face.

Court records show the boy's father and mother divorced in 1999. Bach said that Kyle lived with his father during the week and visited his mother in Beloit on weekends.

WISC-TV has found a MySpace.com web page of a girl who appears to be Kyle Dutter's sister. On it, the woman claiming to be Kimberly Dutter said that "Kyle will always be remembered forever." Photo galleries on the page show the woman with her younger brother.

Friends have added their condolences to the page, reacting to the sad news.
