A 4-month-old girl died in a duplex fire early Friday morning.

The Sheboygan Police Department said Cheyenne K. Isacson, along with 25-year-old Charles A. Isacson and 26-year-old Aran Stelling, was trapped in the upper level of a home at 23rd Street and Indiana Avenue after the fire broke out at 3:30 a.m.

Police said the home was fully engulfed in flames and officers could not get upstairs.

"All you could hear is the mom screaming 'help me, help me." The whole back was in flames When we came out and glanced, all I could see was fire and smoke, it was horrible, bad," said Sarah Olson, the family's downstairs neighbor.

Isacson dangled the baby out of a second-story window to keep her away from the smoke. However, the smoke became too much to handle and he jumped from the window with the baby in his arms and landed in a window well.

Stelling also jumped from the second-story window, suffering minor injuries in the fall.

Police said Isacson was not seen by rescuers, and it's not clear how long he and the girl were in the window well before being discovered.

The baby was taken to St. Nicholas Hospital, where she later died. Police said it was not immediately clear if the fatal injuries came from smoke inhalation or the jump.

Charles Isacson suffered serious injuries and is now at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison in critical condition.

The fire started in a kitchen and the fire inspector said there were no working smoke detectors in the building.

At this time, the landlord and tenants are not facing fines for not having working smoke detectors.

The five residents living in the lower level escaped without injuries.

According to neighbors, the family had just moved in and it was their first night sleeping in the house.
