Fox Lake Correctional Institution remains on lockdown after an inmate beat two guards with a claw hammer Monday morning, leaving them both injured.

Department of Corrections spokesman John Dipko said inmate Terrance Davis attacked two corrections officers in the prison's furniture shop where he has worked for two years at about 8:15 a.m. A third officer stepped in and tackled Davis.

"We had an individual intervene and subdue the individual and help save the lives of our officers to say the very least," Maria Pearce, of Fox Lake Correctional Institution said.

Davis was moved to another prison and put in segregation after Monday morning’s incident.

Leonard Lesnieski
Davis was an inmate at Fox Lake for five years. He is serving two life sentences for killing police Officers Rosario Collura and Leonard Lesnieski in March of 1985, after gunning them down in a northside alley. Davis served 10 years in an out-of-state prison before he was transferred to Fox Lake in 2003.

"Well, first of all, I'm shocked that he was in a medium security prison. And secondly, was there not any rehab? Really, you just think about how far has this person come in almost 25 years, and to me, it sounds like just as if it was yesterday," Collura's daughter, Stacey Zimmerman, said.

Dipko said both officers needed medical attention, but are expected to be OK. One officer has been treated and released from an area hospital while the other still remains under care.

Dipko said an investigation of the incident is under way.

Fox Lake Correctional Institution is a medium security facility for adult offenders.

The prison is built on 85 acres of land, nine miles west of Waupun.

According to their Web site, the Fox Lake Correctional Institution is the first medium security institution in the country with a no pass system, requiring inmates to take personal responsibility for their actions.

When asked how Davis ended up in a medium security institution, Pearce said within the DOC there are periodic reviews of classifications and that one took place regarding Davis.

"He [Davis] has been here at Fox Lake since 2003 and there has been no major incidents. That’s why I stress there was no provocation There was no hint that this could ever occur and he was actually a general laborer with BSI and was a good employee," Pearce said.
