MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on the city's north side. Police said a six-year veteran of the force shot a suspect in a child abuse case after the man got in a van and attempted to run over the officer.
Milwaukee Police Investigating Officer-Involved ShootingPolice responded to a call of child abuse at a home near 23rd Street and Keefe Avenue at 3:30 a.m. Monday. Officers then left the home to look for a named suspect.
While outside the home, the officers saw the suspect and ordered him to stop. Police said the suspect ignored the officers’ repeated commands to stop and got in a van and drove toward one of the officers in a driveway between two houses.Milwaukee police said the officer then discharged his weapon, striking the 39-year-old suspect. The officer was struck by the van but not seriously injured."The officer was concerned about being crushed into one of the houses. This was in very close quarters between two houses,” Milwaukee Police Department Spokesperson Anne Schwartz said. "The officer had no avenue of escape, was not able to jump out of the way. He discharged his weapon, striking the suspect."One neighbor said she heard the whole incident."The police officer said, 'Don't make me shoot you,' because the police officer didn't want to shoot. When he fired on him the police officer was so upset he was like, 'Oh my God. Oh my God.' He was very upset," the neighbor said.The suspect's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. He is recovering at a local hospital in police custody.Milwaukee police say the 39-year-old male suspect has an extensive arrest record for drugs and weapons offenses.The Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.The officer is on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.
