1 Dead, 1 Injured In Madison Shooting

Incident Happened Near Intersection Of High Point Road, Tree Lane

UPDATED: 4:28 pm CST November 18, 2008

Police said a boy has died and his father was injured after an apparent shooting on Madison's West Side on Tuesday morning.

Officers responded to the scene at about 9:11 a.m. near the intersection of High Point Road and Tree Lane after receiving an anonymous call. Officers found a man and his son -- between the ages of 11 and 16 years old -- in a black, 2006 Jeep parked nearby the Haen Family Park and the Greenbriar Apartment Complex. Both had been shot and were rushed to a local hospital with potentially life-threatening wounds.

Police said the boy later died from his injuries. Authorities have not released the name of the victim.

Police said the boy's father remains hospitalized with what appears, at this stage of the investigation, to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said that police don't believe there's a risk to the neighborhood. Police said the father and son did not live in the neighborhood where the Jeep was found.

Police had set up a wide perimeter around the black Jeep. By noontime, police had towed the vehicle away and left the scene. Police haven't examined the vehicle for a weapon, WISC-TV reported.
