I was eating my dinner while watching the news and I saw that a Wisconsin lawmaker was staging a sit-in because the state had yet to pass a state budget. A budget should have been approved more than three months ago.

Rep. Tom Nelson, a democrat from Kaukauna, has decided to live in the Assembly chamber 24 hours a day, seven days a week until a budget is passed.

I know absolutely nothing about Rep. Nelson but he has already earned my respect. Americans love to criticize their elected officials for not doing enough. Rep. Nelson is doing way more than expected of him. He said he will only leave the chamber to take a shower and use the restroom. His meals will be brought to him.

Can you imagine a United States Senator staging a sit-in? I can’t nor do I expect my U.S. Senators to stage a sit-in. However, the purpose is Rep. Nelson truly cares about his constituents.

What was the deciding factor for staging the sit-in? Nelson said he decided to do the sit-in while speaking with low-income college students in his district who won’t receive any monetary help for school until lawmakers approve a new spending bill.

The man is a hero to local college students.

Of course Nelson has been ridiculed by other members of the Assembly for the sit-in but that doesn’t seem to bother him.
