Bret's Blog: And Then There Was One

POSTED: 4:53 pm CST February 8, 2008

Super Tuesday passed, and on the Democratic side, nothing of note happened. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton basically split the delegates, with MSNBC saying that Obama won 841 to Clinton's 837. As such, I am going to focus on the Republicans, where it seems that John McCain has the nomination all wrapped up. With Mitt Romney dropping out of the race, and no one with any sense believing that Mike Huckabee has a chance to wrestle the nomination away from McCain, everything on the Republican side should be A-OK. Uh, not quite.

Watching McCain's speech to CPAC this week, one has to get the feeling that on the Republican side, things may get ugly. McCain was booed repeatedly when he talked about illegal immigration, and I heard on MSNBC's Keith Oberman that organizers of CPAC had to inform the audience to please not boo McCain (obviously, they did not listen). Any time an audience has to be informed not to boo a speaker, you know things are not going well.

Now, I have heard that when push comes to shove, conservative Republicans will fall in line behind McCain because they do not want a Democrat in office. Maybe, maybe not. My guess is that some Republicans will get in line, but that enough won't, causing McCain to either A) sell his soul to the devil and pander to those who won't back him like a dog wanting a bone or B) stand up to those conservative Republicans who don't like him, tell them to screw off and lose the election. Either way, McCain is dead in the water.

Remember, McCain won the Republican nomination by winning states such as New York, New Jersey and California, all of which are Democratic states. Chances are he will not win those in the general election, meaning independents will not help him where he really needs to win, southern and Midwestern states. So even though right now McCain is basking in the glow of victory, come November, my guess is that his straight talk express will be nothing more than a fiery wreck on the side of the road.
